    Recovering after my Tonsillectomy

On Monday I got my tonsils out. I know what you are thinking.....ouch. Well, besides not being able to eat anything other than broth and popsicles, and only being able to drink Gatorade and water, it is tolerable. Believe me, I was terrified before I finally made the decision to get them out.

I have had strep already twice this year. If it is not strep, my tonsils are constantly swollen, red, and always sore. You definitely get used to it....but in the end I kept asking myself, "Why should I have to live like this?" Wish a little push from my husband, we decided it was time for them to come out.

I showed up to the surgical center in Frederick off of Thomas Johnson. Dr. Yoon is amazing and a great doctor. We showed up an hour before, and they took me back to get in my gown. Of course like any other surgery, all jewelry needed to be removed, and then we waited until the doctor, nurse, and anesthesiologist came out to see me.

My husband and son sat with me until they took me back. My son just had this look on his face.....and I kept asking him what was wrong. My 4-year old son just looked so sad and tears started to run down my face. My poor baby did not want me to go back! However, after my husband asks him what is wrong....it was so not about me. He was sad because he just wanted to go to Chuck E. Cheese. I guess I need to stop thinking about myself!

Anyways, I'm now on my second day of recovery. (Not including the day of surgery.) The pain has been bearable as long as I do stay on top of my meds. To be honest, going through a week of this is so worth it. I look forward to not getting strep, and tonsillitis, and any other tonsil related illnesses.

So have you had your tonsils out when you were an adult? I have spoken to many and they all told me I had to get it done. Let me warn you...do not read the horror stories online! I psyched myself out so bad but I could not turn away. I just kept reading and reading....but I still got past them and went through with the surgery.

I have been drinking lemon-lime Gatorade over and over. It is my best friend. Right when I woke up from the surgery I drank 3 small cups of water. Listen to your doctors when they tell you to stay up on the fluids. Drink water, drink Gatorade, drink, drink, drink! It does help with the pain. However, I did soon realize that ice cream is not the best thing. Yes, it tastes delicious, but is not great when recovering from tonsillectomy.

So now I wait, and rest some more, and wait. I'm still going through the healing process. The doctor and nurses stated that day 3-5 are the worst, but I'm going to stay positive. As I sit here I will drink some more Gatorade and look forward to the healing process being over and done with.

    Li'l Helper

Every now and then we all need a li'l helper. You may screaming, "Yes!!" as loud as you can right now. Let's face it....getting things done and achieving goals means a lot to me, however, letting someone or something help you can also take the stress off of your shoulders which is not a bad thing. After reading this, if your little one is still using a bottle or nursing, you are going to want to get your hands on a li'l helper.

    (Picture provided by li'l helper.)

"The li’l Helper was born soon after Joe Murillo’s first daughter.
Then 27-years-old, Joe’s lifelong passion for tinkering landed him a career as a jeweler, and helped him develop an expert’s touch crafting with his hands.
Despite being a team with his wife, she and Joe sometimes found themselves struggling to keep with up with daily chores while their daughter was nursing.
Fortunately for busy parents everywhere, the idea for li’l Helper struck Joe one day at the supermarket after he saw plastic clothes hangers and remembered about how his daughter instinctually and tightly gripped his finger.
Soon after, Joe was at his workshop, armed with a blow-dryer and molding plastic rods into a bottle holder that one day would become li’l Helper.
“From then on my wife was like, “Holy Smokes, where’s that baby bottle holder you made?” Joe remembers.
Soon too, family friends started asking for their own, and Joe knew he was onto something that would help parents like him, who sometimes wished for an extra set of hands while driving, cooking or working.
Today, Joe’s ingenuity and li’l Helper are freeing parents everywhere to multitask at work and do simple tasks at home, even while keeping loved ones entertained and nursing nearby." ~ li'l helper
How neat is this item??? We have all been there. Sitting down with your baby and cuddling while he/she is eating is a wonderful feeling and moment. When your child is an infant though, we are doing this every few hours throughout the day. If you have an older child or if you are still working from home and you absolutely need to get something done, then the li'l helper can help you!
This item is BPA free, super easy to clean and safe to throw in the dishwasher. If you twins you will fall in love with the li'l helper right away. The li'l helper's ergonomic design matches the natural nursing posture so you can rest assured that your li'l one will be happy. These can also make great gifts for expecting parents! So....which color will you choose?

    Our Latest Love: Babiators

My son is in LOVE with sunglasses. It seems like everywhere we go, there are sunglasses being sold for his age, and he will flash those long eyelashes to try and get another pair. Does he wear them all? He definitely does. Spending a few dollars here and there is not that big of a deal, especially when he is always wearing them.

I came across a brand, Babiators. First of all, I love the name. How cute! Next.....what they are about. Babiators offers your child 100% protection against UVA and UVB rays.

     (Picture provided by Babiators.)

"Why should we be concerned about protecting our children’s eyes from UV exposure?  Children’s sensitive skin needs sunscreen to limit dangerous UV exposure and their eyes need protection too. Here are the facts:

When compared to adult’s eyes, children’s eyes have fewer natural protections against UV exposure, making them more likely to be damaged.
The more time you spend outdoors, the more susceptible you are to sun damage. Published scientific research concludes that up to 50% of lifetime UV ray exposure may occur by age 18, so it’s imperative that we protect our children’s eyes now!

According to Dr. J. Keller Wortham, a physician with Optimum Wellness Family Medical Group in Los Angeles, excessive exposure to the sun during daily activities can contribute to cataract formation, macular degeneration, pinguecula and pterygium (growth on the eye's surface), photokeratitis (snow blindness), and skin cancer on the eyelids. Those are a lot of big words, but the bottom line is this: protecting your children's eyes is critical.

The EPA recommends you wear sunglasses even on days with a low UV index!
Given that children’s eyes do not have as many natural protections from UV, children spend more time in the sun than adults, and time in the sun can lead to permanent eye damage, we feel it just makes sense for kids to wear sunglasses!

When it’s bright outside, adults wear sunglasses – our children should do the same!" ~ Babiators

    (Picture provided by Babiators.)

I always love when my son likes to bring out his rocker side. He spikes his hair, throws on his Little Trendstar t-shirt, his gray jeans, and these babiators fit right in with the style. They have colors for your little princess as well. If you have a daughter and a son, you know how it is. If you get for the one, sometimes it is just easier to get for both of them. At least this way you know that their eyes are being protected!

Shown above are the Blue Angels Babiators. You can get them in black, silver, white, navy, lime, pink and black, princess pink and more!

Head on over to Babiators now and let your child pick their own color. You both will be happy customers!

Guest Post By jb @BuildingMoxie "Man Cave Schman Rave – Give Me a Bar More Practical"

This is most definitely the first time I have ventured out and have submitted (if Stefanie will have it) to a Mommy Blog. Of course, and as we discussed it, me - being a dude, a dad – the Daddy angle would work just fine. But what to write about? My blog / our blog Building Moxie happens to be about DIY and Pro Home Improvement, with a big emphasis on the “Improvement.” So what do I . . . know? Anything Modern? I don’t know. Anything Stylish? idk. Anything Chic? Ha’Well!
Then it hit me (like a Flintstone-sized boulder) -- Man Cave! Certainly Modern, Certainly Stylish and Definitely . . . Ha’Well! At least they’re well documented. Here’s a good read from Spatial Designer Brandon Smith,
To Man Cave or Not to Man Cave. I mean – the “Man Cave” even has its own show on the DIY Network >> Man Caves.
Now I don’t know about you, but I have never been in a house where I had the space to create anything like a subterranean hangout. Ok, each of my residences (old houses) has had a “cellar” -- not usable. BUT all have had ample attic space too.

In each, I’ll admit it -- I’ve had big plans to carve out a little place for myself, you know . . . up there, in the attic. Maybe not so much a full-on “Stairway to Heaven” --
    an Attic Hangout, but just a little someplace where I could set up my long-unused, very-lonely, and right-now-gathering-dust bass gear, maybe a four-track too . . . and a hi-fi … ooo! Or maybe some video equipment, a TV and . . . .

I mean – I don’t need a pool table or a dart board, and I definitely do not need a big screen TV or a bar – not me (Oh Wait!). But still, it never seems to happen. And in this house, with something like 96.5 % certainty -- it will not happen . . . again. We’ll move first, and that’s just how we roll.
Break it down -- I simply have many more items, which are simply of a much higher priority than some project that would help me escape my family, and my girls. Evyn Aleksandra – 8; Eva Varrah – 6; Jenifer Janelle – 40. (whoops!). And OK, there are times when I do feel like I need to get away . . . especially around bed time.
So this leads me to my point. If I had one discretionary improvement that I wish(ed) I could or would make -- I’d add a small (elegantly-done) kitchenette to my upstairs. Ok, “a bar.” A Beverage Center – a young parent’s dream.
Now follow me -- in my house (currently, an 1889 farmhouse), and as with all of my previous houses, the bedrooms are located on the second floor. And of course, the kitchen(s) are on the first. Now picture this: Me settling in downstairs in the office (read: on the couch in front of the tv), when I hear, “Dadddddd!!!!!! I NEED icey cold water. Noooowwwww!!!!!!”
This almost always comes right toward the end of our nightly rituals. It’s up the stairs for jammies, brush and to bed, usually with one of the parents for books and/or whatnot. They (the girls) typically sleep in our eldest’s bedroom. In the winter – I’ll set a space heater and fill the humidifier. Done! (And OK, my wife usually does the “putting them down” for the reading and such.)
After nightly kisses and “sweet dreams” I’ll dart off back downstairs for work on our blog.
And I mean -- it does have to be formal as to incorporate built-ins, but sink – yes (and slap a water filtration system on), a mini frig – yes, maybe a dishwasher and/or even a nuker (for an occasional hot snack) and for me, yes definitely someplace that makes and holds ice.
Oh yes! Just how much time and headache something like this would save me! Oh yes!
Something like one of these might do. Check ‘em! (Thanks out to one of my fave resources,
Houzz.com, and to friends Crown Point Cabinetry & Garcia Cabinetmakers for making these images available.)

    Spruce St. Cottage contemporary kitchen

Oh and the vodka! Tell me that Vodka doesn’t have a place in parenting. Ha! And I know, it’ll never get done. BUT . . . if I had the budget.

Do you have something like this going? And truth, my wife and I rocked a college boy mini frig, stuffed into a bedroom corner with the newborns. It doesn’t really have to be much or that well evolved; it just has to be something that makes . . . life, just a little bit easier.

    Thoughts? And thanks for reading.

SAG AWARDS: Rose Byrne + Naya Rivera, John Frieda

    ROSE BYRNE:

Inspired by the retro, feminine look of Rose Byrne's gown, John Frieda International Creative Consultant Harry Josh created a modern take on the classic wave by keeping them controlled, glossy and flat to the head.

    Step 1 – Prep
    · Josh applied a few pumps of the John Frieda Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Formula Hair Serum ($9.99 at drugstores) through wet hair and blow dried using a large, round bristle brush. "The key to this look is a flawless blowout," said Josh. " Her waves need to be completely controlled and any hint of frizz would disrupt the style."
    Step 2 – Style
    • After sectioning off the hair, Josh wrapped each section around a small curling iron and then carefully brushed it out.
    Step 3 – Perfect
    • Josh finished off the look by applying a sheer coat of John Frieda Frizz-Ease 100% Shine ($5.99 at drugstores) to ensure that her waves glistened when the light from the flash bulbs hit on
    NAYA RIVERA:

Celebrity hairstylist Clyde Haygood gave Naya Rivera a statement-making red carpet look for tonight’s SAG Awards: with dramatic and glamorous long waves, Rivera looked like a modern day Veronica Lake. Below please find the steps he took to create her sleek and classic look, using products from John Frieda.

    Step 1 – Prep
    • Clyde applied Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Original Formula ($8.99 at drugstores) to Naya’s wet hair before blow-drying. “We wanted defined waves, and this serum blocks out frizz and gives you sleek results.”
    Step 2 – Style
    • Next, Clyde used a curling iron with a 1 ½ inch barrel to begin curling hair section by section, pinning each curl with a duckbill clip and spraying Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray (5.99 at drugstores) to set.
    Step 3 – Perfect

    · Once the curls cooled, Clyde sprayed just a few spritzes Frizz-Ease Spiral Style Spray Gel ($5.99) for definition and added shine. “We also used this gel formula to sculpt the hair away from Naya’s face” so her romantic makeup would be more visible when she hit the red carpet.
